:: Working At Shred-it

Believing in success begins by believing in people. At Shred-it, there's no question our achievements are a direct reflection of our talented staff. Every employee combines hard work, confidence and commitment that has put us at the forefront of our industry. We expect nothing less.

Our ongoing prosperity is a matter of continuing to attract the best people to our organization. It has been a core principle of our company from the outset, just as it has been to create an atmosphere where people want to, choose to and love to work. Attract the best business into a global leader. So far, so good. But we're only getting started.

Hiring the Best Fit
Capable people with drive and accountability make for great companies. It's a simple rule, and it works.

Recruitment & Selection
As we are strong proponents of hiring from within to fill new or open positions, preference is given to current employees of Shred-it. However, our commitment to locating the best candidate for a position will ultimately influence our final decision.

Our selection process is thorough and seeks to identify candidates who demonstrate a relevant balance of skills, knowledge and experience. Depending on the position available, specific guidelines-and in some cases, additional selection tools-are used by the hiring manager to ensure all criteria are met.

Orientation & Induction
At Shred-it, we consider it essential that new hires have a complete understanding of our business. As part of the orientation process, within the first three months new employees will receive the following:
  • Minimum one full day on the truck
  • Minimum one full day in sales conducting cold calls and teleprospecting
  • Orientation Handbook
  • An overview of policies and procedures including, safety, vacation, benefits, customer services, dress code, expenses and travel
  • An overview of the Shred-it performance agreements, checkpoint meetings, annual performance and compensation review program
  • An introduction to our HR Policy & Procedures Manual
  • Also under development is an interactive web site orientation program that will be password protected and corporate branch accessible.

Retaining the Best Fit
It's all about growth-as an individual and as a company. Combine those two goals and you've got a strong organization with long-term aspirations.

Performance Management
In our drive to deliver a consistently high level of service, all staff should be familiar with our Performance Management System. General Managers and Supervisors are expected to assist their staff with the Performance Agreement and Checkpoint review processes.

Personal Development
We feel personal development should motivate every employee to enhance their skills and evolve their strengths. That's why we encourage staff to take courses that will boost their effectiveness on the job and build confidence. Even more important is collaborative development - the time supervisors dedicate to mentoring staff and helping them optimize their skill set. By building from the inside, we are continually empowering our employees to achieve their goals and extend their reach. One need only look at our performance to see what benefits this strategy produces.

Compensation & Benefits
Our compensation and benefits program adheres to strict guidelines but above all promotes fairness and equity to all staff.

Performance reviews are conducted three times within a twelve-month period, the final review representing a year-end evaluation. These reviews comply with Shred-it’s Performance Management System to ensure impartiality and consistency.

Finally, Shred-it insists staff take their allotted vacation time. Due to the pace of our growth, we want to ensure our employees allow for time to rejuvenate.

Associate Relations & Communications
Open communication is fundamental to us moving forward. That's why Shred-it has developed procedures to facilitate the free flow of ideas and feedback between all levels of staff. By creating an environment that promotes mutual respect and candid discussion we can better understand where opportunities and challenges reside. Regular meetings allow staff to raise any issues of concern and have them dealt with in a timely manner. These meetings encourage straightforward dialogue so we can work as a team to develop solutions and overcome any problems.

We measure the effectiveness of these meetings through our annual employee surveys, which in turn act as the basis for implementing improvements to our strategic agenda.

As an overview, Branch level meetings will include:
  • Weekly sales team meetings
  • Customer Service Representative team meetings per period
  • Quarterly all-branch meetings
  • President's conference/video meeting every fourth month

Support Centre level meetings will include:
  • Bi-weekly department/team meetings
  • All Support Centre staff meetings per period
  • President's conference/video meeting every fourth month
Health & Safety
Shred-it is dedicated to providing a safe and healthy work environment for all staff. We expect all employees to work responsibly for their own sake and for the safety of their co-workers.

We demand all lost time accidents be reported to the branch General Manager on the day of the accident. For further details of our policies and procedures, please refer to our Health & Safety Manual.
